Ο Ηλίας Υφαντίδης γεννήθηκε το 1976 στην Αθήνα. Μεγάλωσε μέσα σε μία οικογένεια με ανεπτυγμένη μουσική παράδοση, όπου το άκουσμα της ποντιακής λύρας ήταν πολύ έντονο· ο παππούς του έπαιζε κι ο ίδιος λύρα.

Στα επτά του χρόνια ξεκίνησε τις μουσικές σπουδές του στο Ελληνικό Ωδείο Αθηνών και σε άλλα ωδεία. Μέχρι τα δεκαπέντε του ασχολήθηκε με το μπουζούκι. Το 1991 έγινε η πρώτη επαφή του με την ποντιακή παράδοση, όταν μπήκε για δύο χρόνια στο χορευτικό του Συλλόγου Ποντίων Αγίας Βαρβάρας «Ο Φάρος». Την επόμενη χρονιά ξεκίνησε μαθήματα λύρας στο Σύλλογο Ποντίων Κορυδαλλού «Εύξεινος Πόντος» με δάσκαλο τον Γιώργο Αμαραντίδη, με τον οποίο καλλιέργησε και το ταλέντο του στο τραγούδι.

Στα δεκαεννιά του χρόνια κυκλοφόρησε τον πρώτο του προσωπικό δίσκο με τίτλο Εγώ Ποντιοπούλ’ είμαι τα’ όνομα μ’ έν Ηλία, σε μουσική και στίχους Γιώργου Αμαραντίδη. Εκτός από λύρα παίζει αγγείον και φλογέρα. Άλλες προσωπικές δισκογραφικές δουλειές του είναι οι: Πόντος... οψέ - οσήμερον και πάντα και Αυδές Πόντου.

Έχει λάβει μέρος σε πολλές συναυλίες, εκδηλώσεις συλλόγων, και μουσικές και θεατρικές παραστάσεις, τόσο στην Ελλάδα όσο και στο εξωτερικό, παίζοντας λύρα και τραγουδώντας. Έχει επίσης συνεργαστεί και συμμετάσχει σε δίσκους πολλών καλλιτεχνών.

Παραδίδει μαθήματα λύρας καθώς και μαθήματα ποντιακής διαλέκτου και μουσικής, ενώ παράλληλα γράφει στίχους και συνθέτει μουσική. Έχει επίσης γράψει μουσικοθεατρικά έργα σχετικά με την ιστορία και τον πολιτισμό του ποντιακού ελληνισμού.

 

Ilias Yfantidis was born in 1976 in Athens. He grew up in a family with a strong musical tradition, where the sound of the Pontian lyra was ever-present — his grandfather was a lyra player himself.

At the age of seven, he began his musical studies at the Hellenic Conservatory of Athens and other conservatories. Until the age of fifteen, he studied and played the bouzouki. In 1991, he first came into contact with Pontian tradition when he joined the dance group of the Pontian Association of Agia Varvara “O Faros” for two years. The following year, he began lyra lessons at the Pontian Association of Korydallos “Efxinos Pontos,” under the guidance of Giorgos Amarantidis, who also helped him cultivate his talent in singing.

At the age of nineteen, he released his first personal album titled Ego Pontiopoul’ eimai ta’ onoma m’ en Ilias (“I Am a Pontian Boy, My Name Is Ilias”), with music and lyrics by Giorgos Amarantidis. In addition to the lyra, he plays the aggeion (bagpipe) and the flute. His other solo discographic works include Pontos... opse - osimeron kai panta (“Pontos... Yesterday, Today, and Forever”) and Avdes Pontou (“Echoes of Pontos”).

He has participated in numerous concerts, cultural events, and musical and theatrical performances in Greece and abroad, performing as a lyra player and singer. He has also collaborated and appeared on albums by many other artists.

Ilias Yfantidis teaches Pontian lyra as well as Pontian dialect and music, while also writing lyrics and composing music. He has additionally written musical-theatrical works related to the history and culture of Pontian Hellenism.
