STAVROS (STAVRIS) PETRIDIS

Stavros Petridis was born in the village of Fantak in Trapezounta in the year 1896, and he passed away in Kalamaria, Thessaloniki in 1949. He is the father of the "Patriarch" of the Pontian lyra (kementze) Gogos Petridis.

With the uprooting of the Christian populations in 1922, Stavros established himself in Kalamaria. already known from Pontos as a lyra player. From a young age was a master lyra player and an uncomparable singer; he was easily able to meet every musical need as a master entertainer for all Pontian functions. He would strike the curiosity and admiration of not only Pontian Greeks but the Turkish people as well. In Greece, he was the artist who spread the music and songs of Pontos as no one else did, especially in Northern Greece. With his kementze he would visit even the most out of place villages, playing and singing for the purpose of entertaining his compatriots.
He recorded four records that touched the lives of two generations of Pontians. The lyric that he made famous is the one that he also sings on his famous 78 rpm recordings:

O Stavris o kementzetzis (Stavris the kementze player)
me kamposa paidia (with many other young men)
Eperen tin parean at (he took his friends)
ki ekseven sa xoria (and left for the villages)

We read in the book of G. Andreadis "Kalamaria mou aksehasti" (My Unforgettable Kalamaria):

"Im my ears I still hear his (Stavros') songs and his kementze. I was a time of poverty, a time of great poverty. When he passed away, behind him in the funeral procession was all of Kalamaria, and then some. The deceased, however, was poor, and the funeral services were performed by Father Nikolas (Papanikolas). Stavris may have been poor, but he was honored by Kalamaria. As Stavris was placed in the grave, next to him they placed his favorite instrument, his kementze, that always accompanied him. I remember how Papanikolas bent into the grave and took the kementze, and gave it to Gogos, the son of Stavris, who later became the Patriarch of all Pontian lyra players. "Take this, my son", Papanikolas told Gogos, "This lyra has a soul and does not belong in the grave!" Gogos took his father's lyra and started to play....
With the first bow sliding across the strings, the crowd began to uncontrollably weep.

One of the greatest advocates of Pontian song was leaving from this life."
